More about Chloé

The founder of Chloé, Gaby Aghion, was born and raised in Alexandria, Egypt and is actually educated within political science. She moved to Paris, France with her husband Jacques Lenoir – also her partner in business – and started the brand in 1952.

Chloé is named after one of Gaby Aghion’s friends – a woman who she though embodied ‘the carefree attitude of the modern women’ at the time. Chloé moved women’s fashion away from haute couture and the formality that followed and made fashion more available to women without straying away from high quality.

Karl Lagerfeld was appointed creative director in 1966 after having worked under Aghion for years. His designs have been a key part in shaping the Chloé identity still present today. Lagerfeld stepped down as creative director in 1983 and Gaby Aghion retired shortly after.

Martine Sitbon took over as creative director in 1987 and the brand’s popularity showed no sign of slowing down. One of Sitbon’s most well-known contributions to Chloé were campaigns featuring Christy Turlington, Claudia Schiffer and other famous women.

Another famous creative director took Martine Sitbon’s place in 1997 – Stella McCartney. McCartney graduated from Central Saint Martins College og Art & Design and was always surrounded by creativity. Her reign at Chloé involved the combination of charm and sass and is best remembered for her use of horse motifs.

The playfulness and youth in Gaby Aghion’s original designs have never been forgotten – only developed.
